Harmful toxins in the home

There are many toxins around the home that can cause poisoning to your pet. Even the foods that we eat can pose a threat to pets. Our food is not always suitable for dogs or cats and some can be downright dangerous. Chocolate and caffeinated drinks like coffee can cause convulsions and even death if eaten by a dog or cat.

Grapes can cause kidney disease and onions can cause anaemia (low red blood cells), both of which can be life threatening for our canine friends.

Some animals have a distinct liking for our garbage, but the combination of unsuitable and rotting food can make them very sick, often causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Cats have been known to chew on the plants in the home, but some of these like the lily are quite toxic and should be kept away from inquisitive felines.

Insecticides like snail bait & other pesticides like Rat & Mice bait can also be toxic to dogs & cats if ingested. Please make sure that all products used around the house/yard are safe for your pets.

Luckily most instances of poisoning can be successfully treated if you seek medical assistance straight away.

So provide a good quality balanced pet food for your dogs and cats, avoid using harsh chemicals/pesticides in the home & always choose pet friendly products!

The most important message is if you’re not sure, don’t let the animals have access and if you suspect a poisoning please call your Veterinarian straight away for advice.
