We often travel along the road forgetting that we share them with our wildlife. We need to be aware that they are wild animals and to preserve life we should always be on the lookout.
What can we do to help our preserve our wildlife?
- Adhere to road rules. Especially in forested/rural areas.
- Be particularly careful driving around during dawn and dusk. As this is the most common time for wildlife to be active.
- If you see an animal injured always stop!
What do we do when we find injured wildlife?
- Remove the animal from the road, wrap up in a towel or blanket or put in a box. (This helps keep the animal secure and allows them to stay calm).
- If the animal has a pouch, please check for offspring. Often they are still alive and healthy.
- Recently a female wombat was deceased on the side of the road. Inside her pouch a baby was found alive, which was passed onto our fantastic wildlife carers and we are pleased to report that Herbert is doing very well!

If the animal is severely injured please call your local Veterinarian, this ensures the state of health of the animal is assessed and treated as needed.
Warning: Care should be taken when handling wild animals. When injured or stressed they can react quite aggressively.
